Clop Ransomware has been active since 2019 and has been mostly associated with financially-driven criminal groups. However, lately this ransomware payload has been observed in campaigns against universities and other institutions in the education vertical.

Just as our physical world has suffered from a devastating health pandemic, over the last 3 years the digital world has been suffering a ransomware pandemic that grew 7 times in 2020 compared to the same time in 2019. While we have vaccines for our health crisis what are our options to help protect us against this digital threat?

A ransomware attack is a bug that we can’t shake off. Or perhaps, it can even be called a shape-shifter that somehow finds a way into networks, no matter how many armed sentries you’ve deployed in and around your perimeter. The line between ransomware and a data breach is slowly fading. Threat actors prefer ransomware over other modes of attack because they work.

As a security analyst on Elastic’s InfoSec team, a common scenario we see is users coming to our team and asking: “Is this file safe to open?” Or one user reports a phishing email with an attachment that they didn’t open, but we see from the logs that 10 other users also received that email but didn’t report it and no alerts went off on their systems.

Adrozek is a malicious browser modifier that, when installed on users’ machines, infects them with adware. This particular strain of malware has been making rounds since May 2020; according to Microsoft, it was at its peak in August, when as many as 30,000 computers were affected per day. Although classified as adware, Adrozek is also designed to collect information extracted from browsers by modifying browser settings and extensions.

Over the last few days, third parties and the media publicly reported on a malware, now referred to as SUPERNOVA. Based on our investigation, this malware could be deployed through an exploitation of a vulnerability in the Orion Platform.
