2024 was a huge year for Apache DataFusion, and 2025 is looking to be even bigger. The project officially became a top-level Apache Software Foundation project, achieved best-in-class performance for querying Parquet files in the ClickBench benchmark, and had a research paper accepted for SIGMOD.

One of the most interesting stories in the dashboarding space over the past year or so has been the emergence of the Perses project. This is an open source project which not only provides a platform for dashboard creation, but also sets itself the very ambitious target of defining a common standard for dashboards as code. In case you haven’t heard about it yet, FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers’ European Meeting) is a huge, free, gathering for open-source software enthusiasts that happens every February in Brussels, Belgium. It’s a non-profit event put together by the community, and it’s one of the biggest of its kind - we’re talking about around 10,000 people from all over the world coming to hang out and talk about all things open source.
