In a previous life as an Android developer, a customer reported a nasty bug that we didn’t know how to fix. After what felt like countless hours of debugging and writing back and forth to customer support, our only option left was to get our hands on the users’ local database. However, for a variety of reasons, we couldn’t ask the customer to root the device, copy the database, and send it to us.
2nd February 2021: Canonical’s Ubuntu Core 20, a minimal, containerised version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS for IoT devices and embedded systems, is now generally available. This major version bolsters device security with secure boot, full disk encryption, and secure device recovery. Ubuntu Core builds on the Ubuntu application ecosystem to create ultra-secure smart things. “Every connected device needs guaranteed platform security and an app store” said Mark Shuttleworth.
Some of you may have seen recently that we are trying to commoditize machine learning through our MLTK smart workflows. Here I’d like to outline another example of an MLTK smart workflow, designed to help improve the usability of the predictive capabilities in ITSI.
When we announced our license change for Elasticsearch and Kibana, moving the Apache 2.0-licensed source code to be dual licensed under both the Elastic License and SSPL, we also mentioned we would work closely with the community on a simplified and more permissive version of the Elastic License. I am happy to share the results with you. The Elastic License is already widely used.

Earlier this month, Elastic announced that there would be upcoming changes to its open source licensing. These changes do not affect on-prem deployments of Elasticsearch. Since Mattermost Enterprise Edition uses Elasticsearch in its on-prem deployments, we felt it important to explore the reasoning behind Elastic’s decision, how the new license terms are different, and why there will be no impact on Mattermost users as a result of these changes.
WebPageTest tries to use real browsers and devices for testing whenever possible, but doing that at scale has some serious challenges, particularly when it comes to testing mobile browsers. There are a lot of different moving pieces, from the device itself to everything that needs to be in place for traffic shaping. The phones themselves pose significant reliability challenges.
