PagerDuty sat down with J. Paul Reed, a Senior Applied Resilience Engineer at Netflix, for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) to discuss best practices around postmortems. How do you design a product that customers love to hate? “Hey, that thing you’re responsible for is down. Oh, and people have noticed and they’re complaining about you on Twitter. OK BYEEE!” Our customers love PagerDuty (they legit tell us this). At the same time, they hate hearing from us because it means trouble.

This month, we are excited to announce a new set of product updates and enhancements built for real time and designed to fit the way you work, where you are, and with the tools you love to use! We continue to focus on enhancing the core functionality and aesthetic of the PagerDuty mobile app to help users better manage their digital operations while on the go. We strive to go beyond harnessing digital data from any software-enabled system to transform any signal into real-time insight and action.

For better or for worse, we have become a society obsessed with efficiency. There are watermarks of it in every corner of our lives—from digital banking and e-commerce apps to smart thermostats and doorbells. Yet, despite us using automation in almost all aspects of our personal lives, a joint study conducted by PagerDuty and Dimensional Research found that, in contrast, 90% of companies have little to no automation for issue resolution.

Social distancing remains essential as we eventually make our way through a post-COVID-19 world. Gone are the days of gathering 50 people into your largest boardroom, ordering pizza, and training them to be fully ramped on a product they are going to be relying on daily.
